Weekend Price Drops: Once in a Lifetime Edition

And you may ask yourself, "Well... how did I get here?"

And you may ask yourself, “Well… how did I get here?”

This weekend is associated with no particular holiday or milestone and yet — thanks to the munificence of Space Emperor Xerxes XIV, whose every howl is like music to his subjects — it is quite possibly the biggest discount weekend of the year so far.

We’ve got the first-ever discount on out-sized WWII wargame Panzer Corps, a big sale on squad tactical game Frozen Synapse (our runner-up Multiplayer Game of the Year last year), and more besides. Trailers and discounts await your attention below.

Until Commander: The Great War drops next week, Panzer Corps for iPad is still the biggest, most complex war game on mobile. I smothered it with praise last year in my review and then went on to write a newbie guide for it. This is one of my favourite games, you may have noticed. Publishers Slitherine aren’t moved to sales very frequently, so the 50% discount you’re getting this weekend isn’t liable to come around again anytime soon, or maybe ever.

Panzer Corps is half-price at $10.

Match-3 puzzler Scurvy Scallywags is free right now. I spent a little time with this one when it came out last summer. It’s got a few twists on the usual match-3 mechanics and it’s pretty funny, too, which might have something to do with the involvement of former LucasArts producer Ron Gilbert.

Ravensburger’s highly respected iPad port of the renowned Euro board game Puerto Rico is discounted to a dollar right now. If you like Lords of Waterdeep, check this one out.

Sci-fi squad tactical game Frozen Synapse is a dollar this weekend, which is crazy good value. You get a nice meaty single-player campaign for that, plus multiplayer that works cross-platform with the game’s still-vibrant PC player base, and a memorably good soundtrack.

I thought modern warfare tactical game Breach & Clear was pretty darn good when I played it last year, and it’s received a steady stream of updates since then that have added a lot of content. It’s totally free for the weekend, which makes me hope that Gun Media is about to announce an expansion or a sequel.
