Jehovah’s Witnesstowers, waving their copies of the Watch Towertower.
The iPhone tower defense game has now been around so long that there are venerably old franchises within the genre. When I got the news yesterday that a new Sentinel game was in the works, I actually felt a pluck of nostalgia. Not because I have a great affection for the Sentinel games (tower defense isn’t really my preferred thing, as you might know) but because the name reminds me of when the App Store was young and the games on it were unsteady fledgelings. I still remember discovering Canabalt and GeoDefense and thinking that the future was going to be a lot of fun.
Anyway. There’s a new edition of Sentinel, one of the titles from that old class of iOS gaming pioneers. Sci-fi tower defense title Sentinel 4:Dark Star is in iTunes submission right now and aims to release soon, and odds are good of an Android release eventually. There’s a 26-mission campaign and the game will features units of your own that can be deployed among the towers.
This will be the first new game in the series since Sentinel 3: Homeworld came out in 2010 — to reinforce how long ago that was, the trailer after the jump for that previous game is in 240p resolution and features a completely unironic dubsteb soundtrack.
Developers Origin8 most recently shipped the admirably solid mobile edition of Transport Tycoon last year.
No video for Sentinel 4 yet, so let’s take a trip down memory lane with 2010′s Sentinel 3.
