Out Tonight: Sol Invictus, Frozen Synapse gets small, Wizard Golf and more

Starting tonight, size doesn't matter in Frozen Synapse.

Starting tonight, size doesn’t matter in Frozen Synapse.

Usually the Out Tonight post focuses on the glut of new apps that hit the App Store at midnight on Wednesday. Tonight, however, we’re going to mix it up and start with an old app that should be getting a new version tonight or tomorrow. Frozen Synapse is a fantastic multiplayer game of simultaneous turns and high tension. Players input their moves at the same time, and then the turns play out in real time based on what each player selected. It’s different and a lot of fun and, until this new version hits, only available for iPad and Android devices. Tonight it will arrive for iPhone as well.

The iPhone version will be a separate app, and not a Universal update. That said, if you want the iPad version, you can pick up Frozen Synapse right now on iOS here and Android here.

We’re still getting some new apps tonight as well, so keep reading to see what else you’ll find.

One of my favorite gamebooks of 2014 was Heavy Metal Thunder from Cubus Games. From a mechanisms perspective, it wasn’t really anything you haven’t seen from Tin Man Games or other gamebook developers. From a writing standpoint, however, it was bonkers. Seriously, some of the most fun writing I’ve read in a while. Tonight, the story of the Black Lance Legion and the alien Invaders continues with the sequel, Sol Invictus. No videos for Sol Invictus yet, but check out the video for Heavy Metal Thunder to see what you’re getting into. It should be out tonight for both iOS and Android.

Wizard Golf RPG is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Golf, but with wizards. Still don’t get it? Me either. Here’s the deal, it’s a dungeon crawl but your wizard is shot around the dungeon like a golf ball. You’re trying to reach the ladder (hole) on each floor to progress through the dungeon. It’s really weird, but it looks like it could be a ton of fun. There’s a veritable dragon’s hoard of RPG elements on top of the golf game, so if you’re not a golfer don’t be scared away. Check out the trailer. It’s about as exciting as watching golf. I recommend fast forwarding to about 1:05 if you want to see any gameplay.

Gunbrick is a puzzle/platformer that looks pretty interesting. You play as a cube which I’m assuming is the titular Gunbrick. You roll about as best as a cube can, and move through levels trying to do…something. Who cares, blow stuff up and get to the end of the level. Gunbrick should be available for both iOS and Android tonight.

The last game is Spectrum-3D Avenue from Bulkypix, which is another puzzle/platformer. This one takes a more abstract bent than the explosion-laden Gunbrick. Spectrum 3D puts you in control of what can only be described as a sentient sperm traveling through some crazy levels, I’m guessing to avoid touching the sides. It looks like some of the levels will get really freaking hard, too, which is a good thing. Spectrum should be available for both iOS and Android tonight.

Now, go hit the comments and tell me all the stuff I missed!
