Out Now: Roll a d6 Edition

Get into character, everyone! I’ve got the foam swords and painted cardboard shields, I hope someone brought hackeysacks to represent the wizard’s fireballs. This week’s releases tilt toward old-school Fantasy Roleplay, unless you're an Android user, in which case you'll be trading in Dungeons & Dragons for Tights & Titans.

Ember

Ember is a retro-RPG “10 years in the making.” Magical shards rain from the sky, bringing chaos and destruction, but heroic Lightbringers set out to claim the power of the shards… and save the world, I guess. A Lightbringer is you!

This one's also an iOS exclusive.

The Quest HD - Islands of Ice and Fire

After the epic HD remake of The Quest comes the epic HD remake of The Quest’s first major expansion. Some say the islands are made of fire, some of ice… I, I packed snowshoes and asbestos boots, and that made all the difference - sorry, Rob.

Yup, iOS only, like all The Quests before it.

Komrad

How cool would an AI-driven Soviet-era chatbot app be? Well, Komrad isn’t it. Instead, it’s a Lifeline-style gamebook about interacting with an out-of-touch Soviet AI. Don’t be too disappointed, though, as this fake AI was written by Brad Becker, one of the people responsible for IBM’s Watson.

If you've grown bored of trolling Siri, you can have a more real conversation with a more fake bot on iOS (only).

The Virus: Cry for Help

Lifeline isn't a __game anymore, it's a genre. Unlike Komrad, The Virus sticks close to the “helping a stranger in dire circumstances” formula. This time the threat is, you guessed it, a virus. Should'a followed the CDC's Zika recommendations...

The epidemic rages on iOS and Android.

Paul Pixel - The Awakening

Paul Pixel is some shmuck of a nobody until adventure calls, whereupon he more-or-less rises to the challenge. Gee, that happens an awful lot, especially to middle-class white guys with boring lives.

Awaken your inner homebody and send them off to complete a life-changing quest on iOS. Android users get to kick back, open a bag of crisps, and surf the net.

Titan

Titan is one of those classic geeky boardgames from back in the day before games were expected to make sense. This one's a regular clash of the titans, sans Harryhausen. The __game looks like an attempt to derive the fantasy equivalent of NATO symbols, but that, along with centaurs that don’t have a ranged attack and hydras that do, is part of Titian's singlar charm. Kelsey reviewed the iOS version of Titan favorably, and now the classic comes to Android.

Now's your can learn why you should have played the tutorial first on Android as well as iOS.

Pavilion

Android doesn’t see a lot of exclusives, but NVIDIA’s been working to change that, at least for owners of their Shield devices. Pavilion is a beautiful, surreal environmental puzzler, and Shield exclusive, and by exclusive I mean that it’s coming to PC, but launching for Shield first. No word on whether other mobile gamers will get this “fourth person puzzler” soon or at all.

If you have a Shield tablet, Shield TV, or one of those strange controller with a little flip-up screen things, you can get Pavilion here.

Sentinels of the Multiverse - Season 2

In another unusual coup, Android users are getting access to Season 2 of Sentinels of the Multiverse before the iPhone and iPad crowd. To be clear, this is a season pass, with one hero, one villain, and one location unlocking with purchase, and oodles more to come.

If your Galaxy Note 7 hasn't exploded yet, this is your chance to steal a match on Tim Cook. Act now!

Oz: Broken Kingdom

When not-Steve Jobs announced the iPhone 7, he demonstrated Apple's commitment to premium apps by demoing Oz: Broken Kingdom …a Free-To-Play game. Well, at least it's pretty. Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man, not without virtual currency.

Goodbye yellow brick road… I've evolved you into the more-powerful goldbrick road! On iOS and Android.

Biker Mice: Mars Attack!

Remember Biker Mice from Mars? Sure you do! It's right up there with Street Sharks and Samurai Pizza Cats in the annals of classic 90s cartoons. Well, now you have a chance to pre-empt all three seasons of the show by winning the war against the Plutarkians on Mars, before the mice ever even come to earth!

Biker Mice: Mars Attack! is a FTP game with Advance Wars-style mechanics. You can see how that pans out on iOS or Android.
