News By Numbers - November 7th, 2016

Welcome to this week's edition of News by Numbers, where we highlight some of the latest and greatest mobile gaming news from the past week.

Otherkin: 1 player story mode

It was inevitable that the Pokemon Go craze would inspire other digital games that got gamers outside and active, whether they liked it or not. Otherkin is an adventure RPG where you are your own avatar. You go on quests that lead you outside into the real world where you gather mana-like energy through use of hand-eye coordination and reflexes. There is a single-player story mode but you'll also be able to challenge other players in combat. Spells and abilities are activated by your body movements and you gain benefits from spectators watching the battle. What could possibly go wrong?

Frost: 2 new scenarios

Frost Beyond the Wall, is out and adds two new scenarios to the game. In one, "The Skeptic", you believe that the Refuge is an illusion and the better bet is to lead your people over the wall and to safety. In "The Recruiter" you are looking to find a new workforce for a growing settlement beyond the wall. The update also adds a new __game mechanic that lets you change the current event, an ability that adds a random skill to one of your survivors, five new cards, and a menu option that lets you view your collection of unlocked cards. Check out my 4-star review for more on Frost, which you can get from Apple or Google.

Demon's Rise: version 3.5

Demon's Rise, a turn-based strategy RPG, got a big update last week to version 3.5. The new version adds maps and content, including nearly doubling the magic items found as loot or purchasable in the shop. It's a fun __game and you can grab it on iOS.

Fangold: 5 elements

Fangold is a deck-building, role-playing battler where you embark on an adventure in order to harness five elements—fire, water, land, air, and light. These elements will be used to create a combo-filled deck to crush your opponents. Battlefield terrain will play a key role in games as well, an interesting twist on a well-trod genre. Fangold will feature PVP and a single-player mode as well as card crafting. It is under development for iOS and Android, as well as PC, Mac, Xbox One, and Playstation 4.

Potion Explosion: 7.2 on BoardGameGeek.com

Asmodee Digital announced via twitter Potion Explosion, a board game all about concocting crazy recipes, is under development and will be coming soon to iOS and Android. Boardgame publisher Horrible Games and indie game-maker Studio Clangore, both based in Italy, will be involved.

In 1775: Rebellion you choose a faction and play through the Revolutionary War as one of seven different factions. Each faction has a deck of event and movement cards as well as its own combat dice. 1775 offers cross-platform online play and allows you to play on teams. It is a popular boardgame and has been on Steam for some time, and now, a mobile version out for iOS and Android.

Stay tuned for our upcoming review.

Carbon Warfare: 100% extinction

Upcoming simulation game Carbon Warfare puts you at the controls of a human catastrophe. Your goal is to generate massive amounts of carbon emissions to raise the global temperature and squeeze out humanity's habitable zones. You'll look for the right combination of industries (oil, auto, housing, etc.) and ecological disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, drought, and disease) to end humankind. It won't be easy, some wily humans will look to stave off elimination. You'll need to manipulate the media and public opinion and adapt to political and environmental changes to find success. Carbon Warfare releases on November 10th to iOS and Android.

Hearthstone: 132 new cards

The next Hearthstone expansion, Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, was revealed at Blizzcon last week. The expansion features three crime families and will introduce the game's first multi-class cards. The "Grimy Goons" represent Hunters, Paladins, and Warriors. The "Kabal" is known for Mage, Priest, and Warlock classes. The "Jade Lotus" is all about Druids, Rogues, and Shaman. The expansion will go live soon (early December) and 31 out of 132 cards have already been revealed.

Dynasty Football: 350 cards

Queue music. "Are you ready for some footbaaaaaaaall, CCG-style footbaaaaaaaall?!?" In the forthcoming Dynasty Football you'll be able to draft from over 350 players and powers and build a team and dominate a league with a high-flying offense or bone-jarring defense. More info is here where they confirm it is "coming soon" to both iOS and Android. No mention of pricing model, though it'll almost certainly be freemium. We can hope it is more the Hearthstone method than more egregious types.

Compendium of War: $5,000 goal

Compendium of War is a turn-based strategy game seeking funding via Kickstarter. There will be three warring kingdoms each with its own heroes, creatures, and equipment. The game will feature an evolution system for creatures where you can control their path forward. Compendium of War will be free-to-play and there will be in-app purchases meant to "make the game more fun with customization."
