News By Numbers - February 6th, 2017

Welcome this week's edition of News by Numbers, where we highlight some of the can't-miss mobile gaming news each and every week.

Mysterium: version 1.0.16

Mysterium had another update last week to address a few thing. First, they made further improvements to the tutorial and the game's help features. Second, they addressed the chat function—an extremely important aspect of the __game unless you play with friends via Skype. Chat changes ranged from better contrast in colors and italicizing Ghost messages to making it possible for the psychics to chat during the culprit phase until the ghost has sent them cards. These changes may address some of my concerns about the __game and are very welcome.

Splitter Critter: 4 bonus moons

Splitter Critters is a puzzle game based on the swipe-to-slash mechanic that just came out a couple weeks ago. You cut up the two-dimensional environment to help some hapless critters find their spaceship. The developer clearly intends to support this title, four bonus moon levels were added in version 1.1.3. If you enjoy puzzle games and want to support a developer doing right by their player base, try Splitter Critter on iOS.

iOS 11: 32-bit support

Starting with iOS 9 Apple has included a warning that 32-bit apps might slow your device down. An updated dialog message found in a beta version of iOS 10.3 now says the app will not work with future versions of iOS. This suggests Apple intends to eliminate support for 32-bit apps, perhaps as early as with iOS 11 this fall. Developers will either need to update those apps or they will stop working. A lot of earlier and still great games will cease to work as a result of this change.

Magic: The Gathering Puzzle Quest: 58 new cards

Back on February 2nd Magic: The Gathering Puzzle Quest added a whole slew of new cards from the Aether Revolt expansion. There's also some new events in store including a new coalition challenge, Valentine's Day event, a Planeswalker challenge, and a couple PvP events centered around the most recent expansions.

The Horus Heresy: Battle of Tallarn: 66 different unit types

HexWar Games and Games Workshop are partnering to bring The Horus Heresy: Battle of Tallarn to iOS. This one is all about the mother of all tank battles with 66 different units and 54 different weapons all ready to be brought to bear in three different campaigns, each featuring six missions, as well as four battle packs of six standalone missions each. That's a lot of combat. Battle of Tallarn will be turn-based action and you'll be able to play as either Imperial or Traitor forces. The game launches February 8th on Steam, but no word on whether the release to iOS will happen concurrently.

Talisman Digital Edition: 81 new adventure cards

The Firelands expansion for Talisman: Digital Edition is out now on Windows, Mac, Android and (according to the release trailer) iOS. Available via in-app purchase it offers players 81 new Adventure Cards, 19 new Spell Cards, 19 Terrain Cards, 3 Alternative Ending Cards, and 4 new characters. You'll need the base game which is pretty cheap on both iOS and Android.

Legends of Callasia: 100 backers

Legends of Callasia was one of the surprise hits of 2016. I enjoyed both the original game and its fast-following expansion. As it turns out, there's quite a story behind how the game took shape and was funded. The support of about a hundred die-hard fans ultimately made it happen after two failed Kickstarter campaigns. A third successful Kickstarter funded the expansion thanks to that same core fan base. With fans like that who needs backers…or something.

Plague Inc.: 85 million players

Plague Inc. is a strategy game where you seek to infect all of humanity with a devastating epidemic. The game's been around roughly forever and sees continued success—and a huge player base—thanks to frequent updates. Another such update is on the way, this time adding a scenario creator to the mix. This new addition will allow players to develop and modify their own scenarios for the game and share with other users. The Plague Inc. Scenario Creator is coming in the next month or so as a stand-alone app for iOS and Android. It will cost $2.99 and you'll need the base game in order to play your newly crafted scenarios.

Pokémon GO: $1B in revenue

It isn't exactly a Pocket Tactics title, but the success of Pokémon GO is relevant to the mobile-games industry at large. Sensor Tower estimates that Pokémon GO surpassed $1B in revenue at the end of January, just seven months after launch. It reached the billion-dollar milestone faster than any mobile game before it. Nintendo is hoping to replicate this success with Fire Emblem Heroes [iOS|Android] and there is little doubt large studios the world over are doing the same.

That's it for this edition of News by Numbers. If you've got a news item worth sharing send it my way on Twitter @MrVigabool and it may show up in a future edition.
