Tencent has revealed plans to launch its own TV channel in China dedicated to broadcasting eSports called ESPTV.

The news was announced as part of a recent Tencent press conference, which was live-tweeted by local eSports industry member Sheng Yi.

ESPTV will be a collaboration between Tencent, Riot Games, Perfect World and IPTV. As such, its initial programming will largely focus on Riot's hugely popular PC MOBA League of Legends.

The bigger picture

That said, there is still scope for mobile eSports to become involved. Tencent is the publisher of mobile MOBA Honour of Kings, which currently has over 50 million MAUs in China alone.

There's also interest in eSports in China outside of the hardcore titles. Casual eSports __game Battle of Balls surpassed 300 million users in April 2017, just as it launched its next series of tournaments.

The world of eSports is also gaining further mainstream legitimacy in Asia following its inclusion in the 2022 Asian Games. It will make an appearance at the 2018 games as a demonstration sport.
