Oh look! A squirrel! : Hunted Cow bringing card game, Nuts!, to iPad

...we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads on our tanks.

…we’re going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads on our tanks.

Okay, everyone else can stop trying. When we announce next year’s Most Misleading Title of 2015 award, I’m pretty sure Hunted Cow has this one locked down. The game is called Nuts! and it isn’t about squirrels or everyone’s favorite segment on America’s Funniest Home Videos. No, Nuts! is a card game that simulates the Battle of the Bulge and refers to General McAuliffe’s famous reply to the Germans when asked to surrender in 1944. It’s not like they could have changed it if they had wanted to, it’s also the name of the 1998 card game from Decision Games of which this is a digital port.

This is Hunted Cow’s second collaboration with Decision Games, the first being the American Revolutionary War game, Rebels & Redcoats. Unlike that one, which was an actual board game, Nuts! is an out-of-print card game that was considered too wonky and complicated even by grognard standards. Having a digital version taking care of the rules for you should simplify things and make the game understandable even for us mere mortals.

In this 2-player game, each player will control either the US or Germans and will play cards representing brigades, regiments, and battalions which will be moved around the table to attack the other army’s forces. There are also terrain cards such as Bastogne or Elsenborn Ridge which will affect your units’ speed. Event cards, such as Patton praying for clear weather, will also be part of the game. The game will come with pre-defined setups that replicate the locations of actual troops during the war, but Hunted Cow is also trying to include a random setup function.

Nuts! should be released for PC in early 2015 and for iPad shortly thereafter. After the break, check out some screenshots and a video of a grognard, Joe Steadman, trying to explain and review Nuts!.
